Typical Garmin. There is a lot to like. The map and split screen showing turning lane details with overhead route signs is very clear and easy to follow. The directions are always excellent. The spoken landmark turn directions is a very nice feature. But the features that I really love are the Voice Command and Bluetooth link that can be used with the Garmin Smart Link app available free for smart phones like my iPhone.
There have been a number of devices I have tried that feature voice recognition but I have never used one that works as well as this GPS. When you first use it, you speak a code word(s) of your choosing. Thereafter, anytime you speak the code, the voice command system is accessed. The system is then completely menu driven. The menus clearly show the possible voice commands you can use. If you clearly and firmly speak the exact words listed, the GPS recognizes it nearly 100% of time. The few times that it did not were caused by excess noise in the car or not speaking loud enough directly facing the GPS. The voice system allows almost every GPS function to be performed including POI searches by name or category. Once you learn how this system works, it turns using the GPS into a totally handsfree experience nearly 100% of the time.
The combination of the bluetooth capability with the Garmin Smart Link app makes it possible to almost never have to type an address into the GPS again. The app is free and easily downloaded from the App store. The app itself is very well done. You can select an address from your address book and then send it via bluetooth to the GPS. The app also has excellent search capabilities for finding POI addresses to send to the GPS. The app also can be used to save addresses and keeps track of recently sent addresses. There are other features as well.
In summary, we travel a lot and like to have all known destination addresses before we leave. We also have our favorite places to eat and stay over night. With this product and the smart phone app, Garmin has made the “getting there” part of travel very simple and easy. We make sure all the addresses are in the phone app before we leave and then simply send to the GPS via bluetooth once we are in the car. Garmin takes it from with there with the driving directions. Bravo.
